Internet Creates Dancing Pennywise Meme. A group of new videos shows that IT‘s Pennywise the Dancing Clown can dance just to about anything. The first big screen adaptation of author Stephen King’s classic 1. IT danced circles around its competition for two weeks after its debut in early September, as it quickly smashed records for the biggest opener for a horror film of all time, the highest- grossing movie based on King’s works and highest- grossing R- rated horror film ever.

In short, the new IT, following the indelible 1. TV miniseries, has become a cultural phenomenon, and as often phenomenons do, spawned a universe of tributes and parodies as it finds its place among other high- profile pieces of art in pop culture. Most recently, one fan video imagined a Batman V Superman inspired showdown between Ben Affleck’s Batman and Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise; and now, another fan has made a startling discovery: Pennywise the Dancing Clown can dance to all sorts of classic tunes.

In a series of new tweets posted by the aptly titled account Pennywise Dancing since the film’s release, the videos feature the same scene snippet of the murderous clown showing off some serious leg work in the sewers of Derry, Maine – but each time to a different tune. The song selection includes such hits as the Village People’s “YMCA,” Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” A- ha’s “Take on Me” Out. Kast’s “Hey Ya!” and for good measure, Los Del Rio’s “The Macarena.” See the tweets below: Once the creative liberties with the videos are taken, it seems to change the context of the scene completely. Instead of being frightened of Pennywise, the clown does what normal clowns are supposed to do: make you laugh.

Judging the five videos posted in this article, the dancing clown appears to be a perfect match in “Happy,” “Hey Ya” and “Take on Me,” while he’s slightly out of rhythm with “The Macarena” and “YMCA.” Maybe since the latter two have widely- known dance moves patterned after them, perhaps the fact that Pennywise is only moving his legs is throwing off your perception a little bit. No matter the case, it’s great to see fans get creative and have fun with Pennywise and elevate the hype over IT even more.
